The 153 year old upscale purveyor of fly fishing gear and outdoor clothing already has six Orvis dealers in Ohio, including four in northern Ohio. Orvis was purchased by Leigh Perkins of Cleveland in 1965. The company has been headed by his son, Leigh "Perk" Perkins Jr. since 1992.
Boating safety: Four fishermen did things right and were rescued from western Lake Erie last week. The Michigan group left behind a float plan, wore life jackets and stayed with their boat after it capsized. Bringing together local, state, federal and Canadian agencies for the search, the Coast Guard found the four clinging to their overturned boat near Middle Sister Island in Canadian waters. They were rescued July 3, the day after the men were reported missing after being overdue at their Monroe, Mich. launch ramp. They had told family when they were going fishing, where they were headed and when they expected to return.
"The boaters had done the right thing by filing a float plan," said Lt. Wade Hedinger at the Detroit Station of the Coast Guard. "The men also stayed with their vessel, which aided in locating them."
Boot Camp for waterfowlers: The Ohio Waterfowl Association will return to the Cardinal Center Campground in Marengo, 30 miles north of Columbus adjacent to I 71, for its Waterfowlers Boot Camp and Outdoor Festival on July 18 19. Home of the Ohio State Trapshooting Championship, the Cardinal facility is hosting hunting exhibits,GHD Hair Straightener, waterfowling clinics and seminars and a Saturday's Sportsman's Night Out Banquet.
A highlight is the Waterfowl Hunter's Triathlon, with teams competing in shooting, dog handling and calling skills.
Camouflage rods: There is little that can't be covered with a camouflage pattern, but camouflage fishing rods?
USA Custom Rods of Houston, Tex., is offering a variety of Mossy Oak camo patterns on its fishing rods, including a pink break up pattern for, I guess, the ladies. USA Custom Rods are terrific for catching fish   at $140 per rod they should be   but I doubt the camouflage variety will give an angler an edge in catching big bass or walleye.
